My 2001 toyota corolla with the 1.8 VVT-I 16 valve has 107,000 miles on it.I pulled the #1 cylinder's saprk plug to look at it and see what shape they were in.I put it back in,it idled very rough, like it was missing a cylinder.I double checked everything, replaced all 4 plugs with the correct iridium ones, still did it.The iridium ones don't have to be gapped either. No check engine light was on by the way at anytime.I checked the coils again. It has 1 coil for each cylinder. They all looked fine.So I said fine,I'll drive it to the Toyota Garage. On the way,I throttled the piss out of it and the idle smoothed out and ran like a bat outta hell.So then I pull over and see if the engine idles well in park, and sure enough,it did.So everything's cool now,but I don't know what the hell was goin on with this car, what made it do that.I checked the service manual and there's no special procedure for takin those coils out or the plugs out.Just a torque spec on the plugs which I did torque them to spec

Well since its not doing it anymore the vehicle might have been receiving some bad information causing it to run rough... its hard to check for such faults since it does not do it anymore... if it where to set the light it would give insight to which area should be seen. We had a problem with our 05 corolla and it was a programing issue... not to say thats the problem with yours but most likely it was a computer mishap

I had such an experience with my camry 1998. You shouldnt ever touch whats working right in your car!!! Mine kept on stalling until it suddenly stopped. I actually removed my spark plugs and on fixing it back, the car found it hard to start.
