I know it sounds kind of trite, but the honest truth is that one of the best treatments for depression is regular vigorous exercise. Even just a brisk walk 3 or 4 times a week will help. Use this as an excuse to buy yourself a nice iPod and then commit to working out at least 3 times a week for 40 minutes at a time while enjoying some of your favorite music. Drink at least a half-liter of water (or more) during and after your workout.

Many people may not realize they're hypoglycemic or borderline diabetic, so eliminating sweets and empty calorie foods from your diet will help. Your diet has an enormous influence on your mood. Diet isn't always about weight control, but it can be an added benefit. Taking depressants or stimulants like alcohol or caffeine can also have a negative effect. Try to cut these out if you can. Cut down on fried foods, fast food, junk food; eat more fresh fruits and raw vegetables. I promise it will help.

Certainly, medication and therapy can be very helpful for many people. But there are a lot of things you can do on your own to manage your mood so that you may not need medication.

Certain events in my life are trying and saddening, and I get depressed because of them.

What do I do to eliminate the depression? I try to fix the event. If the event continues, so does the depression. Nothing Pfizer Inc. makes will make the event less serious, only physical reaction.
