I was stationed their for 7 years. Garlstedt, Bremerhaven, Bremen. Weisbaden, Wuersburg, Swienfurt, Wildflecken, Dortmund, Vilseck, Grafenwier, Sennelager, and so on. Bavaria is by far the best part of the country. Garmisch and Berchteshgaden is a blast and so is Zalsburg, Austria. What a memories that will never forget. This is one good thing to be a soldier!!!! Goodluck, I know you like it...

i was in vilsec down in the state of Bavaria, if you stay on base everyone speaks English. it was a small base but was OK weiden was about 40 minutes away and graphenver was about 30 it is a base also. check was about a hour away, definitely worth going to , so bring your passport , but you should have it anyway. you time will be more fun if you learn German and go out on the economy and interact with the citizens there , because going to the base bar base PX and base movie theater gets pretty old after awhile and you will be there a minimum of 3 years.
have fun its great

Awesome place! Try all the food (even if you don't like it) tried sarkraut there and loved it. I hate it here, but a friend talked me into trying it and it was good. The food is pretty cool, beer all tasted the same to me, but good, the clubs all sound like the same beat, but fun anyway, and Ausfart means exit, apparently. None of us knew any German - still don't! We all piled in a rental to sightsee and thought we were lost and going in circles until someone got out the dictionary and looked it up. Great place to have fun, see ALL of Europe by car or train, and just immerse yourself in a different culture. Oh, and they all sound like they are yelling at you or being mean but it's just their way of talking.

There's lots of beer ad sausage. You don't need to learn much German. Your straightener won't work in the plugs. You can either buy one there or use a transformer. A new one would probably be cheaper.

sorry hun but your fiancee will not be taking you anywhere at the governments expense until you say I do.......and if he already has unaccompanied orders (which they would be if your not already married) and if you know thats where hes going he probably does have them already its gonna be really tough to get them amended.......which you cant start doing until after you are married..so even if you get married before hes due to go there is a long process.....i had a friend that got married after basic training when he found out his first base was in japan.....he went there after tech school in august of 04, his wife finally got all her paperwork done and he got his orders amended and she joined him in march of 05. oh and btw if you live on base your hair straightener (and all your other appliances) should work in the plugs...just not off base.

I hate to burst your bubble, but if you are not married, you will not be able to live with your BF over here. It is mandatory that ALL Soldiers who are less than an E6 live ON Kasern, and if that Soldier is unmarried, they HAVE to live in Barracks. You will not be allowed to live with him there....and you will NOT be allowed Gov't Quarters being unmarried. You also will not be able to stay over here longer than your Civilian Passport allows, which I believe, is only 3 months.
As for 'having to learn some hardcore German'....true, you don't have to learn it, but I promise you, you will NOT have the respect of us Germans here. I am German/French, and I do speak German...as does my DH. The Germans do know Englisch, as it's mandatory to learn in Schools nowadays. But the older Generation, well, it is THEIR Country, and they expect you to learn it. After all, as Americans in America, when someone from another Country go there, 'you' expect and even demand that they learn to speak Englisch, correct? It's only fair the other way around.
Many Americans don't like us Germans, for we are abrupt. Many call us rude, but we're not. We just don't have time for small talk and don't engage in it unless we are friends or like the other person. You have to have your own cloth grocery bags if you shop on the Economy.....you HAVE to recycle. When you shop, the Cashier will not engage you in conversation and you have to bag your own things...
There are so many things, too many to really go into here. But, I get the feeling that IF you DO get over here somehow, you will be one of the many Americans who will be back in America within 30 days upon arrival. If you happen to get married before he comes this way, that doesn't automatically mean you will be coming here. There are many steps and hoops to jump through first.....Again, too much to go into here.

I'd imagine it was in 1945 after the War ended and was by the Army and was likely a former German post.
