Every person is responsible for his or her own destiny. The government is there to help you but you have to help yourself first.

The US is the only nation on the planet that blames the poor for poverty. This is old "Hoover" propaganda. President Hoover stuck to the story that the Great Depression was a mere recession caused by malcontents who were unwilling to work even after he lost the election. History can now demonstrate that the Great Depression was a global problem, and if not for FDR the US might have emerged from WW2 as a much poorer country. I believe that the same will be seen about this period in American history. It is the same with slavery and the treatment of Native Americans. Now, we can all look back and say we would have never fallen for that propaganda, but at the time the same sheep were repeating the same song we hear about the working poor today. Looking at the bigger picture, at least for the country we are in (Philippines), the government can be partially blamed, not for the poverty itself, but for not having the capacity (or initiative) to help those below the poverty line. A lot of governments funds are being corrupted. Money and fund that should have been given to those in dire need.

In the Macro level, government can be blamed, not for poverty again, but for not having the capacity to uphold the integrity of their administration and failing to provide solutions to much of the country's basic problems (especially debt). The ineffectiveness of the government, though it doesn't in itself cause poverty, does not help alleviating it.

Some people have more talent, energy, drive or any number of other qualities that make one a success versus someone else.

If people think the government should provide them with success then, in that case, it's the government's fault. But I'd say that expectations like that are just a little unrealistic.

I wouldn't mind living in some fantasy world either, but we live in the real world. It's not always nice and it's never fair. However, we all have to learn to deal with it in one way or the other.

The alternative is to annoy everyone with incessant whining, complaining, and blaming.

Blame the person. The person is the one that will determine his or her future. If the person gets an education and a good career that helps. Then it helps if that person marries only once and has only a few children. Multiple marriages and lots of kids are also recipes for being poor.

The "government" is actually an agent of yours and your neighbors. Unless individuals volunteer to donate money there is little a government can do without legally stealing taxes from the citizens. If one does not expect their neighbor to give them a handout, they shouldn't expect it from the government. Poverty can, and should, be cured by people voluntarily helping each other.

Poverty is definatly not a lifestyle choice. People in the US are hard on the homeless but they havent bothered to think.....they say get a job! Who the heck is gonna give a job to a rotting stinky filthy bum. They have 0 chances. All they get is donations...they have it alot harder than you think....so dont think all Americas citizens are all happy with money. Our society is geared to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

People should not blame the government for their poverty because they should not rely on government aid for their living. People must ask what they can do to their country and not what the country can do for them.

In the US, it costs a lot of money to be poor. Rents in the ghetto are higher than in middle class areas. People live in ghettos because elsewhere the neighbors would keep calling the police on the poor's criminal activity. After a while, if the poor did not move out, the neighbors would burn them out. So they move to a part of town where criminality is tolerated.

Poverty is a lifestyle choice. Instead of working, get up at about 6 PM, do crack, live a Roman Orgy every day, sell your body, collect huge tax free sums for welfare.

The government.

Who favors the wealthy and the powerful?

The government.

Who favors cutting out money that is designed to help the poor, the disabled, and the elderly?

The government.

Who favors in cutting back education and access to better paying jobs--in favor of tax cuts for the rich?

The government.

In all respect, it is the PERSON's job to get himself out of poverty. But if the government continues to set up blocks and obstacles to a better life and a better education--by restricting public access and funding--are you still going to sit there and blame the person for not doing enough?

Last question:

Who sought and successfully BLOCKED every increased minimum-wage bill brought foward in Congress for the last six years?

The government.

Need I go on?
