The pope is no one's father. He is very powerful in world politics. The Vatican is richer than any nation on earth. As far as helping the poorest countries, I'd say not much if at all. The Pope is not concerned with physical suffering, only concerned with where the soul ends up. He has stepped over starving children, given them a blessing, and kept on going.
His insistance on NO contraception for poor women is one of the reasons the poor STAY poor. And why the babies are starving. And why Africans are dying of AIDS. The Pope does not believe in using condoms because it might prevent a pregnancy (in a country riddled with AIDS and famine). So I guess he does help the poorest countries stay poor.

I am a non-denominational Christian.
The term "Father" is allocated to the leader of the Catholic church. The "Pope" is the ultimate leader of these leaders - it is like a hierarchy. But it is wrong to say that the Pope is the "father" of all Christians, because the Protestant side do not believe that a man (or any man) is justified to be "greater" in position than another.
How powerful is he in world politics? To begin with, you must clear all presuppositions that Christianity and politics are interlinked - because THEY ARE NOT (and are not supposed to naturally; I'm not sure how the USA has politics and Christianity interlinked - no other predominant Christian country does that). However, he does play a role - that is, he provides moral advice to politics.
Does the Vatican help the poorest countries in the world? I would not say the "Vatican" itself (because that is just a place), but rather, the active Catholics certainly do. Just as how normal Christians might go overseas to help out, or just to donate money to charity.
P.S. Catholics are STILL Christians - they worship the Christ, who we call Jesus. Catholics do not worship Mary, they worship God alone. They prey to Mary. The issue of prayer is elaborate and deserves another topic altogether.
At this current time, the reason why contraceptions are denied is because Catholics ideally believe that sex, marriage and pregnancy are all interlinked. Contraceptions will prevent that ideal linkage.

He is, but most non-Catholics won't accept that. He has great sway morally in the world. The Vatican and the Catholic Church does help poor people all over the world.

No Jesus is the father of all Christianity. The Pope only mentions his name. As to whether the pope actually follows Jesus or was chosen by Jesus is entirely a different subject.

No, I don't think that he has much influence in the States.
I guess the Vatican sends out missionaries out to poor countries.

Q1. No, he is not the father of Christians. That title belongs to Christ and people who follow him are called Christians.
Q2. He has PR value, but not as strong of a political figure as he used to be.
Q3. I don't know if they personally help, but I'm pretty sure Catholic missionaries do.
