Just seems like good gun safety to wear a jacket.

To my understanding the 49 states that have some sort of deer / elk season require all hunters using modern firearms to wear a hunter safety orange vest and a safety orange hat. The size or quantity of the orange varies from state to state. Normally a set amount of square inches of material.

As for hunters using camo and face paint? This is mostly for archery / primitive weapon season. These hunters usually hunt at a closer range and often "stalk" the deer. This close courters type hunting usually negates the need for the orange material identifying hunters to eat other.

And remember, although deer are said to be color blind they still have vision that is highly acute to movement and they see shades of light and dark. So orange does still appear a "bright" spot to them.

Deer arent completly blind, they just cant see colors. Now the cmao would appear as dark grey to black and the face a white. thats why, it breaks up the human look. The orange vest appears as a lighter grey where the camo is darker. It is actaully illegal in my state to not have orange on in gun season, but bow season, anything goes. An arrow wont travel as far so by the time it gets within bow range, you should be able to tell its not a deer but another hunter, that must be the reasoning.

Deer can't see color but turkey and hogs can and the seasons often run together. I've deer hunted in bright red overalls and had deer stare at me suspiciously, sniff the air and often go back to eating.

Some hunters just get 'into the spirit of things' by going all ranger camo and such. I just hunt.

Best.

Don't forget, buy a special detergent made for hunting clothes.

When using Tide or other regular detergents, the clothes can actually "shine", and stand out in the deer's color spectrum. It's like lighting up your white clothes in a neon light, but to the deer.

There are a couple brands of laundry soap geared for the hunter, that don't have the chemicals in them that cause this.

For the most part, What your trying to do is break up your human outline to blend in with the enviorment.

From my experence, I belive deer can see orange or at least a different shade of color that is different than the woods.

Deer can see colors, but not as well as people see them. I've done experiments that prove it, and research shows deer have cones in their eyes. Orange laws are more for helping law enforcement find hunters than for hunter safety.

Because it makes it very difficult for the Deer to pick up your movements, whether you are moving or not.* Because we have oily skin the camo paint helps prevent giving yourself away due to blocking a shiny face.* The same goes for the hands.*

as a bowhunter i can tell you that i wear camo and facemasks (dont use the paint myself) i use it to blend in with the enviroment to get deer as close as possible. the camo breaks up my outline making it harder for deer or anything else to see me.. during rifle season i use the orange though its the law

Like others have stated, When you are in woods full of trees and leafs, the trees and leafs on the camo will allow you to blend in. And 3d camo like gullie suits help break up a solid human outline
