relax, i'm just wondering. I have a male and female cat, they're 7 months and haven't bred yet.
I don't want to hear anything like, "DONT BREED YOUR CAT THERES ALREADY 54327843204789320749320 (or however many) THAT ARE IN SHELTERS" because I already asked a question about that, go here if you'd like to vent about that: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhAOXf_LGLJJzEoBh_WZfKjsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20070928122726AAHzmcw
But what I need/want to know, does it cause or increase birth defects? Thanks ya'll (ESPECIALLY for not mentioning the "YOUR IRRISPONSIBLE PET OWNER")

Yes it can, both physically and with mental retardation. It's nearly impossible to find homes for cats like that, and many of them are put to sleep because of it.

Members of a family have similarities genetically, which include recessive genes that cause defects and diseases. The risk of birth defects is therefore higher in incestuous relationships. And these recessive genes will have more opportunities to double and become a danger if inbreeding were allowed to continue for a few generations

Yes, just like people, breeding brother and sister cats will result in imbred cats and they will most likely have a lot of birth defects.
I took an animal care course in school and we had an animal centre there, and we had a cat come who was impregnanted by her brother and she gave birth to a litter of kittens and they were all just "off". Their faces almost looked like they had down-syndrome (i mean no disrespect) and some of them walked into walls and paced around in circles. Others would just sit and stare. They all got adopted out, and i completed the course, so i never heard any feedback from the new owners, but i can definitely tell you they were just not right.
I wouldnt breed your cats together. :)

Incest can cause sever birth defects and mutations. Also, not to mention their overall health will be very poor. It's very dangerous and should not be done. It's best to get both of them fixed immediately because they will mate very soon. Male cats become fertile at 4 months of age and females go into their first heat at around 6 months of age. You need to get both of them fixed immediately because it's very dangerous for the female cat to be pregnant at such a young age.
Also, they will mate- they don't care if they are related because animals do not relate like humans do. They will mate if they haven't already.

Short and simple. Yes it certainly does. Inbreeding of any type greatly increases the chance of defects.

There is a reason why incest is illegal in human cultures, and the reason is that it does increase the likelyhood of multiple genetic problems. Just not a good idea at all.
