Would red wine vinegar or white zinfandel (yuk) work? Or something else?

I just started making stew and realized I was out of red wine. I do have lots of different beers lying around, but the only wine I have is zinfandel.

Both are good but so is a smooth Chianti

If you don't have red wine around, you could use a chardonnay or another white - not white zinfandel. You probably use a bit of red wine vinegar, but less than the recipe called for. Beer might even work . . . safest bet would just be some type of stock.

Whatever you do, don't substitute the red wine vinegar. Far too acidic!

If you don't have red wine, an equal amount of beer would work (almost any kind, I think would be fine) or just leave it out. No big deal.

Try Port, I don't like wasting wine. You can have a open bottle or cask of port lying around for ages.
It doesn't go off like wine does.
If alcohol is the problem look for a de-alcoholized wine, usually pretty cheap from a supermarket

neither of those will work the vinegar is too acidic and the zinfandel is too fruity. I would almost skip it all together if you don't have red wine.

It's not essential;-} you could just forget about it.
Wine vinegar would affect the taste negatively.
White wine might be just as good (as vinegar).
Presumably we're talking about a small amount.
You could try coffee instead, if you feel brave.

Beer works well in stew. Reduce the liquid down by boiling it until very little volume is left. It should impart a nice flavor
I would not us vinegar
Zinfandel if it is not sweet.

beer or chicken broth/stock would be your best substitutes. Red wine vinegar is too acidic.

Vodka. It's reasonable in just about anything.from beverages to cooking to desserts. Also I might try white or golden raisins in place of wine.☣
