I am not an expert, but what your mother now has is called peritonitis, which is an infection of the peritoneum, the membrane or sac which contains the intestines. When the infected appendix ruptured, the bacteria spilled out and infected the peritoneum. It is a very, very painful kind of infection, and because it is systemic, wide-spread, there would be fever as well. So, yes, awful as this is, it IS normal.

I am old -- 61 -- and my father was a country doctor. In his day, when people's appendix ruptured, it was a death sentence. But with the antibiotics and very sophisticated medical techniques available now, it is not the killer it once was. If your mother is normally healthy, if she doesn't have any major health problems like diabetes or kidney disease or heart disease, things look hopeful for her. But it will probably take some time, and she probably will be weak for a while, even after she starts to feel better.

YOu can help her by just being very loving with her, letting her know with everything you can show her that you cherish her. Even though you are upset and frightened, don't let her see that, because she is frightened, too, and that will upset her more. Just throw fear out of your face when you walk in the door of her room, and fill your face with joy at seeing her, and with love. That will give her something to hold on to and to feel good about, no matter how awful she feels inside. Love is a very powerful, positive force, and you can use your love for and joy in your mother to pull her out of her fear.

Be strong, Zoey, and don't worry, sweetie. Your mother will come home to you.

I'm thinking she is still in the hospital? She will be ok. Surgery hurts, I promise she will feel better. Your intestines contain a lot of bacteria that is perfectly healthy INSIDE your intestines, but if it gets out of the intestine and into the abdominal cavity it can cause infection. That is likely what your mom has right now. They are likely treating her with antibiotics and monitoring her very closely. A fever is normal with any infection. If she is not still in the hospital and experiencing these symptoms I would want her to call the doctor. I know it is scary when mom's are sick, don't be afraid to tell her your scared - I guarantee she is more concerned with you than she is herself.

This is very serious but it sounds as if the doctors have done everything they can. It will just take time. There are so many antibiotics that can be used now. Your mother has a chance to make a full recovery. I believe it will just take time. The fever and pain are normal. She will have a fever until the infection is gone.

Think positively and pray for her speedy recovery.

She has had a surgical procedure and alot if pain is expected from this. I hope that you understand how serious this is; if she had a perforated bowel, she could be in the hospital for weeks. The infection is internal and can be controlled and removed with IV antibiotics, but she will be in alot of pain and her doctors and nurses will help her.
An infection is likely to prolong her recovery time and make her pain more pronounced. She needs to alert her nurses and her doctor if her pain isn't controlled.
I hope things go well in her recovery.

I'm so sorry for your poor mother :( talk to your doctor he/she would be the best person to answer this, and also ask about pain medications, there must be something they can give her to ease her pain!
all the best xx
