why do my hands and feet burn and itch and become red and swollen?

when it happens sometimes my fingers become swollen and are a little hard to bend. my palms will get very red and in the center of the red area it will be a slight purple shade.my feet become a little swollen and red. sometimes i will have to go and run cold water on my hands just to get a little relief from the burning and itching. my hands and feet will become red first and then they start itching and then swollen. it will usually last a couple of days.

it sounds like an allergy of some sort. does benedryl help?
