Your dog is most likely being protective of you. If he sees other people when he is around you, he wants to protect you and make sure they know you belong to him and not to mess with you.

It can be a good thing sometimes, but he needs to know when to stop. You should try some corrective training, and have a command like "its ok" or "calm down" so that he knows its ok around certain people and not to be aggressive.

He is also probably used to you and your family and may just be unsure of other people. If he came from a shelter he could have been beaten or something, so doesnt like the idea of new people.

Pack instinct, possessive instincts (this human is mine) and often (if not usually) fear. Strangers are unknowns and are thus something to be afraid of. BTW, a well-bred GSD (generally means not AKC registered if within USA but instead UKC or especially, USA (United Schutzhund Clubs of America) registered - SV registered if imported) should stop that behavior once you start talking to these people. All dogs have fear but those with a good working temperament will recover quickly when it is demonstrated that there is no reason for it. If it is of AKC lines, then most likely you will need intensive training in order to manage the fear/possessiveness.

Poor socialization and poor pack leadership. Your dog thinks that it's the pack Alpha and that as such it's his duty to protect the pack. Get professional help on this situation or you could end up in a law suit and your GSD could lose his life.

protective of his family and household. my dog is the same way. he has to check everyone out that comes into the house. if he doesnt like their scent or body language he will growl and snarl in the corner until they leave. dont get me wrong he would never bite he is just telling them that they need to leave and that this is their home. u just need to show ur dog that the people r ok.

He's protective of his "pack" and was not properly socialised as a puppy. Try looking for dog training classes. They may be able to help him some.

German Shepards have been berd to protect their owners. I have one and he is very protective of my family and our other dog. When other dogs or animals come near our fence he tends to bark and scare them off (deep bark), but he is sweet to people (unless he doesn't know you). Take him one walks, hold leash firm but let him become interested in people, don't force it.

That's nothing to be proud of. Consult a behaviorist before you get yourself sued and your dog euthanized.
