I find that tobacco ashes and charcoal briquette ashes produce a most unpleasant flavor. It reminds me of my experience at about age 1 1/2 years when I consumed the entire contents of an overflowing ashtray, including the ciggy butts. I much prefer the ash from pure hardwoods, especially apple or cherry. Though hickory is a nice change of pace. But in either scenario I find that single malt scotch, even an inexpensive one, does ameliorate the taste experience.

You sure they weren't ashes from an open wood camping fire? I'm sure when we've been camping and using an open fire, we've had ashes get into the food. But not intentionally! Was your dad or uncle smoking a cigar while stirring the baked beans?!

Take a can of BB's and empty ashes in to cook, reserve some as a garnish. Yummy.
