I might get a flashing headlight and flashing tail light on my bicycle that I will use during the DAYTIME to make it easier for cars to see me and increase my odds of survival. It will look nerdy but it's better than dying, right?

It's a great idea!! Better trying to be safe than sorry. I use them on my bike especially when riding by myself and especially riding in the hills or in areas shaded by trees. Drivers seem to respect my space on the road more if they see I'm trying to be a safe rider. I wouldn't worry about what others think, do what you feel is best for you. I ride both in the city and country roads, alway carefully.. about 3500 miles a year! Keep on pedaling...safely! 0^0

Flashing tail light seems to make more sense than a flashing headlight, at least to me. Combine them with a high visibility, orange day-glo vest. When you are crossing in front of a car stopped at an intersection, wave to the driver with a big smile on your face until he smiles or waves back. You want him to notice you. When stopped at a traffic light, make sure every car driver knows your intentions, even if you plan to go straight. HTH

In the UK our lighting regulations were changed a couple of years ago to allow cyclists to legally use bike-mounted flashing lights. Hurrah!

At night, I now use dynamo front and rear with stand-light function, plus rechargeable battery flashing LED front and rear. Why? Because it's hard for a motorist to judge your distance from him when you've only got a flashing light. Plus having two separate systems gives me fall-back in the event of gear failure.

Certainly, the cycling guru Richard Ballantine advocated lighting oneself up like a Christmas tree. Also, check out the UK CTC's campaign against mandatory Daylight Running Lamps on cars, etc. They want cyclists and motorcyclists to retain the safety edge that bright clothing and daylight flashers can give us.

Personally I don't think it's a bad idea, but I do question the effectiveness. Most daytime bike accidents are a function of drivers trying to squeeze through gaps or not yielding the right of way. They are rarely caused by not being seen. However, if it makes you feel better, go for it.

I use a flashing taillight day or night. I haven't had the need to run a flashing headlight except when it's foggy. But it will make the cars see you better.

I think it sounds very sensible. Please don't die because you're afraid of what other people think.
