the best kind of hamster for beginners is a syrain hamster, or if you want specfic type, try a black bear hamster, that was my first hamster, and he almost never bit me, your mom says shes afraid of them but let her know they look notthing like rats, no long tails, and not as a long of a nose, they CERTAINLY do not move as fast as rats can, a hamster is really different than a rat, heres some websites that are good for hamster information:

try not to get a dwarf because they are harder to take of, a first hamster should be a syrain hamster

feel free to email me with questions, i would email you an attachment that i made on word, but u can't attach anything to the emails

Well I like Chinese Dwarf Hamsters! They are alot cuter and they are small, They have the longest tail(in the hamster family)! They Love To run! They have a brown line right through there back! So they look like a Kiwi fruit.

the best kind of hamster i think is Djungarian hamster but see if the store lets you hold them and which ever one likes you best you should get
rats don't smell as much as hamsters and will sit on your shoulder

avoid getting a teddy bear hamster. they are most prone to getting the deadly disease "wet tail". as for your mom tell her that it will be your full responsibility and prove this to her. don't make her answer right then and there. gradually prove to her that you can keep this hamster alive and healthy. you may even want to do some reasearch on them and prove to her that there is nothing to worry about.

Some people have phobias of mice and mouse-like creatures. An otherwise sensible woman I used to know wouldn't approach even a dead one.

You'll have to prove to her that you're mature enough to take care of the hamster, including taking care of his cage.

If that doesn't work, you may have to wait until you have your own place.

Good luck!
