Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens in Claremont
Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens
Santa Barbara area wine tasting
Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach
Queen Mary in Long Beach
Griffith Park Observatory & Zoo in L.A.
Catalina Island: hikes, a fun boat ride, camping & hotels
Julian has apple picking this time of year, and there's Anza-Borrego State Park just down the road from there.

There is so much to do, but these are a few I always come back to. Good luck with your itinerary!

1. Lake Arrowhead makes a great weekend if you can get out of town before 3pm on Friday - beautiful plus there's something going on most weekends - like Oktoberfest in October. If you like star gazing, on Saturday nights there's almost always some kind of short astronomy 'lecture' followed by star gazing through the telescope at Rim of the World.
2. Julien - for history and great apple pie. Also nice B&Bs.
3. Getty Museum - both the Center and the Villa (two different locations)
4. Petersen Auto museum (on Wilshire) - guys love it.
5. San Diego - there's Balboa Park, old town (for food, mostly); the gaslight district, touring the Enterprise and listening to great music out on the deck of the aircraft carrier on Saturday nights.
6. Exposition Center in LA - there's a great natural history museum, a Science center, a rose garden etc.
7. The desert - on Saturday there's a GREAT flea market at the junior college; there's also the Living Desert (a great open air 'zoo' of desert creatures) - many hotels with fabulous golf courses and creative pool waterslides (e.g. the Westin Mirage) and - in a pinch you can always hit El Paseo for some great shopping, or Cabazon for some great discount outlets. Ah - and how could I forget the tram to the top of hte local mtn - there are some great simple hikes up there.
