donating a kidney is very rough. what you want to do is called a living donation. it is a very complicated recovery for both the recipian and the donor. you will be put under, and the pain will be that typical of regular surgery with the incision site, healing process and now you only have one kidney. your parents are probably worried because the fact that you will only have one kidney, and if something should happen to that one, will there be enough time to get you one before you die, or you may be stuck on dialysis. its a great idea to donate you kidney and i know you are trying to help, but there is a lot more to it than age, your blood has to be cross matched and tissue typing needs to be done to make sure her body reject your kidney, but even so, it still may, then your kidney is dead and its not doing anyone any good. i talk to a lot of kidney transplant patients that got there kidney from a brother, or a wife or friend or extended family, and they all said they wouldnt do that to a loved one again. getting a donation from someone who is brain dead is still a good chance for improvement. its not as good as yours cause your in good health at the time. but kidneys can bounce back fairly well. i hope this helps out and lets you kind of understand where your parents are coming from. peoples familys donate organs everyday. maybe you can help promote a direct donation in your hospital. hang up signs and such letting people know there is someone in your area that needs a kidney. if not, sometimes a good local kidney maybe sent across the us some where because the order people fall on a list....just an idea

First of all, meeting the age requirement is not the only requirement you need to meet to be an organ donor. You must undergo tests to see if you are a match for her. If you aren't a match, you can't donate a kidney to her. If you are 18 or over it's your decision whether or not you want to be an organ donor. A kidney transplant surgery is a major surgery and you should really think about it before doing it. It is done like any other surgical procedure. You will be under anesthesia when they take a kidney out and you will not feel it. You will feel pain after you wake up from the anesthesia. Also, your recovery time will be a long one.

First of all, this is a MAJOR surgery. In order to donate a kidney, you have to have tests run to see if you are a match to her. If you aren't a match and she takes a kidney, her body will reject it and could cause more damage than she already had. The tests are expensive and some are very painful.
If you should get as far as donation then you would be put to sleep in surgery for the removal. There will be a lot of pain after you wake up. Another consideration, if you have any kidney problems or they find any while you are being tested then you will be unable to donate.
Mostly they try to stay with immediate family first for donations. They would be the first best match for her. I think it is a brave and wonderful thing for you to consider but it is a major thing to consider. What if you have kidney trouble in years to come and need your kidney? IF your kidney that you have left fails, you could die before you find a donor for you. Think about this long and hard. Good luck and God bless.

In order to become a kidney donor, age is not the only requirement. There has to be a compatibility factor to lessen the rejection and success of the viability of the transplanted kidney. .
And you won't feel it at all. You'll be put to sleep under general anesthesia; as it's a major operation. And it's normal to feel apprehensive. After all, hemorrhage and infection are all things to consider as for any operation.
There are lots of sites that you can go for more information. about this Living Kidney donor program. There are telephone numbers that you can call and ask a lot of questions. You ought to be commended for your altruistic motives.

You won't be able to donate a kidney to someone unless you match their tissue type. I'm assuming that, if you're young enough to have to listen to your parents, then you probably have not been typed. It is somewhat unlikely that you will match her tissue type, so I wouldn't get too worked up over the whole thing...although it is very nice of you to think about helping her. She is most likely to have a match from within her family.
Of course you are asleep during the operation to remove your kidney.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
