Prolonged, heavy use of alcohol can lead to addiction (alcoholism). Sudden stopping of long term, extensive alcohol intake is likely to produce nasty withdrawal symptoms, including severe depression, tremors, hallucinations and dry heaving. Long-term effects of consuming large quantities of alcohol, can lead to permanent damage to vital organs such as the brain and liver. The effects of alcohol are dependent on a variety of factors, including a person's size, weight, age, and sex, as well as the amount of food and alcohol consumed. The disinhibiting effect of alcohol is one of the main reasons it is used in so many social situations. In addition, alcohol is implicated in many social and psychological problems, including family conflict, arrests, job instability, injuries related to violence or accidents. Many alcohol abusers experience difficulty in managing their lives. This unmanageability leads to destruction. This destruction comes in many forms. Some users lose jobs, while others lose spouses. These all lead the drinker to more drinking.
More drinking leads the user to more physical problems and more physical problems lead to death.

There are sooooo many- let's see. There's liver damage that is irreversable and eventually fatal. There's alcohol-poisoning that can kill you (if you've drank "too much" in a short period of time so that you're body can't metabolize it fast enough)- there's drunk-driving accidents (that can affect not just the drunk driver but innocent by-standers, as well). There's fetal alcohol syndrome, which can deform and sometimes kill unborn babies. There's domestic violence, which can be intensified in someone who is predisposed already to that problem, and can end in someone's serious injury or death. There's suicide- people who drink too much tend to be depressed, and depression is aggravated by the alcohol, judgement is impaired, and can lead to thoughts of suicide. There are many life-threatening problems related to alcohol, and many more problems that may LEAD to "life-threatening problems". If you or someone you know has a drinking problem and you think it is affecting their life or safety, talk to someone you trust, or seek professional advice or assistance, before it's too late. -Tera (time4u420@yahoo)

if you drink too much of it it 'can' be bad for your liver.... I know too many who drink a lot and don't have problems.
More immediate Life Threatening effects is being out in public or behind a steering wheel when you've had anything to drink. You can get into real trouble. The safest way to drink is to just stay home, associate with only trusted friends, lock the doors, hide the keys, have a few drinks, and pass out.

and how about: getting run over by a car while crossing the road (on foot) drunk? Falling down a staircase drunk? Suffocating on your own vomit while drunk? Drowning yourself in your bathtub by accident while being inebriated? Life threatening effects of alcohol come in many guises, and the list is very long! It does not only affect your health adversely...! Buy my, how nice is it to have a cold beer on a hot day!

You could die of alcohol poisoning if you drink too much in a short amount of time.
You could also kill yourself, seriously injure yourself or the same two things to someone else if you drive while intoxicated.
You could also do stupid things while under the influence like jump out of windows, play in traffic or some other poor decision that renders you in a life-threatening state.

Well, if you're pregnant, it could cause you to go into premature labor. It could also cause major brain damage to the baby. It could cause major organ failure for the poor baby who has no choice but to ingest the alcohol you've dumped into their system.
Not to mention it can cause severe liver damage to YOU. It can also make you chemically dependent on it, as it is a drug.
As with anything in life, if you do it in moderation (and not at all during pregnancy) you'll be okay. It has been proven that a glass of red wine is good for your heart. Beer is supposed to be good too, just don't down a case of beer in one sitting.
