Do you mean you owe someone $300 or do you mean something else? Are you making any kind of payments? What do you mean by "really bad credit"?
A lot of companies do run credit checks before hiring. A poor credit rating is construed as an indication of poor character. It tells the viewer that you entered into some kind of agreement, but didn't keep up your end of the deal.
If the item is false, get it removed or at the very least, insert a comment on the credit report. The best solution is to get it cleaned up. Maybe someone can lend you (I say lend, but I mean give...a family member maybe?) the money it takes to clear that. $300 is a small amount, but if it's the only thing there, or if it validates a history of nonpayment, it will cause you trouble.

What do you mean by a bad credit here? Just a $300 in debt with someone does not make your credit bad. Have you checked your credit report? Is that bad too? Do you have too many black marks?
See, when companies hire they do check your Credit Reports but the number is few. Most companies do not check any credit rating. Apply for jobs. In case ask for your credit report and dont find it satisfying you can always opt for another job who is not asking for it right. So relax and go ahead with a job. All the best.

There are very few jobs that look at your credit rating before hiring you. Usually they are only jobs that require extensive money handling or are prone to bribary such as law enforcement, governement jobs or high security positions.
