First find out what is attracting them and eliminate it. If it is garbage that they are after, either put the trash inside a closed garage or shed or use a garbage can that they cannot get open. If they are after fruit from fruit trees in your yard, pick up all of the dropped fruit every evening. Yes, it's a pain in the butt but by removing the attractant, they will go elsewhere. If, for some reason, you cannot remove the attractant, you will need to buy one or two Hav-a-Heart, live traps. Set the trap out each evening and then take any trapped raccoon to some woods far away from your home to release it. Be sure to check with the local game warden to see if there are any restrictions on you doing this and to get them to show you the safest way to release the raccoon. If it was me, I'd just get some sub-sonic .22 cartridges and a cheap .22 rifle and kill the little pests. The noise is minimal but the .22 will do the job when properly placed. I understand that you don't want to use a gun so the trap is your best bet if removing whatever is attracting them doesn't work.

Raccoons are curious by nature, it's unlikely they're trying to attack you. Raccoons normally "attack" when they're rabid. Rabid raccoons will often attack during daylight hours when it's unusual for them to be awake, as they're nocturnal. What should be doing, instead of killing a family of raccoons, which could very likely wind you in jail, is setting humane traps up during the day. When the critters are asleep and you're free to come and go, set one up. Over the course of a week you should be able to bring all the raccoons to a new location without having to kill any of them. Also, have a look around and see if your living area isn't to blame for the raccoons hanging out by your house. Do you have garbage open, fruit trees dropping apples? Pick up fruit during the day, and make sure your garbage is covered, or better yet, hidden in a hallway inside your house or garage. Good luck, and please rethink killing the raccoons, it's not a difficult problem to solve humanely.

humane trap is a good idea just remember some one has to let it out. i have heard of drowning them in the trap but i would hate to do that.a pellet gun's not gonna do it i use to hunt them with dogs and trap a 22 is what i used but some times the dog still had his hands full.i would suggest a dog but unless it's well trained or very big you'll need a vet. A confrontation is not what you want even a small raccoon can do a lot of damage a pellet gun only makes them mad. I'm curious of the source or where they are coming from or why they are at your house. it could be that there living in the attic or scrapes of food or garbage, look for holes near the roof line. don't leave scraps of food or trash where they can git to it . they love cat food and dog food. be cautious i have been paid to do this before it can be tricky. a trapper in your area would be glad to help you out for free,as there pelt is worth a couple of $$.

You better talk with a game warden. Learn about local laws regarding wild-life. You could wind up breaking a hunting law and spend much more time and money in jail and trying to defend yourself.
I doubt this is legal in your case, but if it's legal, you can drill a hole a little larger than a quarter in a heavy log. It need only be several inches deep. Put a couple of nails in at an angle so that the point goes into the hole. Place a shiny object like a quarter into the hole. Raccoons like shiny objects. They place their paws in to get the object. While trying to get their paws out, the nails puncture the flesh and capture the animal.
You will have to check the trap reasonably often. You will have to deal with an injured animal. It is considered a cruel means of capture. Exhaust other options first.
I've just learned of a trap that might be applied to raccoons. Good luck!

First of all i do not mean any offense when i say, your situation is quite amusing. Well you should try to capture them alive, thats the nice thing to do since YOU are the one invading their space and raccoons aren't mean, I bet you will get pretty 'mean' if some stranger got too close to you newborn. Secondly, if you do decide to kill them, a gun is the safest way. Also it puts a distance between you and your target creating a sort of safety barrier. I dont know exactly what you have in mind when u say you want to kill the coons but do not want to use a gun and you are afraid of getting bit. Your options are pretty much non existant. One option is getting a **** load of fishing line, preferably 4-6 pound test, and i mean like 1000 yards of the stuff, spreading it over your back yard, catching the coons, call animal control and tell them there are a bunch of coons dying in your backyard. I doubt they will charge for that.

Careful first off, raccoons are a furbearing species that require a hunting permit in most states! If you want to kill them without a gun you could use a bow, or poison....if you have a big yard you can use a car to run them over....alternativle you could try one of those ultrasonic things thats suppose to scare them off.

You can set some traps, but it wont kill them, you will have to kill them after you trap them. A .22 will kill the, rather easily, and you dont have to buy one unless none of your relatives or friends have a gun to kill em with. If you are out of city limits is the only way you can shoot them. I dont know of a town that doesnt have an ordinance that makes shooting anything in town illegal. You might also be able to locally advertise that you have some and any hunter is welcome to have them because people sell the fur to make money.
And Lori E. must know nothing about coons, i dont know how many times they have run at me before i stopped them with a hollow point .22! It doesnt suprise me at all they have tried to attack, they are wild animals not furry house cats.

If you will not dispatch them with a gun, then follow JD's advice.
You didn't mention if you live in the city, the country, small town, ?????? You may have other options if you live in the country.
