I have only heard about it and seen it on TV. But I have heard about it for many years.

robert l, I agree with you I really think they are getting it confused with the "will of God". Which can some times get very scary and I am talking from experience.

snake handlers obviously corrupt the word of God which says they will take up serpents and not be harmed to be literally true.
but the scriptures also say Do not Tempt God.
and just for arguments sake, snake handlers like the guy from Australlia who also wrestles crocodiles and got stung by a sting ray handles snakes for years. he was not saved for be a christian.
however Paul did get bit by a deadly viper and was preserved by the will of God. im sure many religious snake handlers have died and were NOT preserved.
it is a foolish religious sect, in my opinion.
there might even be some wicked conspiracies going on behind the scenes.

I do not agree with it. If there is a building consumed in fire, I would not walk into that building thinking I was beyond getting burned. Reason being, God gives us wisdom not to put ourselves in dangerous positions. If we ignore the red lights, eventually we're going to crash. I've heard of many a snake handlers that have died from their charade. I say "charade" because anything we do for the applause of man and not the praise of God is a charade / sham.

I've been all over the U.S., in all sorts of Christian churches, and I have yet to see these snake handlers.
Just as well...I'm not a large fan of snakes.
My opinion of those who do this (if there actually are any)?
They are fools. They misread the scripture that talks about the signs that follow Christians. It is for those who go into dangerous places in order to spread the gospel...if they should ACCIDENTALLY be bitten, it won't hurt them, if they should UNKNOWINGLY drink poison, it won't hurt them, they will be able to communicate with people whose language they have never learned, etc...
There is no promise that if you purposely take up a poisonous snake and it bites you that you won't be harmed, or that if you drink poisoned kool aid that you won't die...

I think they're nuts. I would not get within 50 feet of a snake, if that close.

Does this practice even exist?
It is NOT common, I can assure you. I live in the deep South, and there are NO such churches around here.

It is a little over dramatic . I was in a church that was one step away from bringing the snakes out and that was enough for me to run

Never saw one.
Don't know anyone who has.
Likely media hype, like Jesus Camp.
They like you to believe that the majority of Christians are nuts, when most are average Americans.

I think they're an embarrassment. I also think they should have their children taken away from them for child endangerment. They actually let little kids handle those things!

One of the more egregious examples of that which characterizes all Protestant churches - false beliefs based on misinterpretation of the Bible.
