Thrice in my life I was aware of what I was dreaming, and able to control it....
Three different situations; three perfect nights.
Sometimes I am semi-aware, and control some aspects of it. I am talking about controlling what happens during the dream, so it's exactly what I want to see and feel ,and it makes me feel a sense of happiness or I can have fun.
Two of these controlled dreams involved being able to fly, seing all my friends and family I have not been able to see for years for various reasons, and a lot of crazy things.
The last one was shockingly like yours, except with my gradmother, whom I normally love dearly. She was angry at me, and evil ,and chased me, But, halfway throught the dream I decided it couldn't be real, I was dreaming, and I just flew away. I had fun for the rest of the night before deciding it was probably morening and waking myself up. It turned out to be midnight and I couldn't get back into my dream again. Bummer.
I also can more easily chose what I'm dreaming about. I think about a subject before I fall into sleep, and I usually dream about it. Of course, at the time, I do not know it is a dream, but it is fun to dream, especially about what you want to.
I hope this helps with what you were asking.

Yeah, I can do it as well. It is a really good way to get a little extra sleep. You know the standard dream where you are being chased through some sort of thick glue by some ugly monster? I change the monster to a good looking babe and let her catch me. Seriously.

It happens to me all of the time! Often in a dream I find myself saying, "Wait a second, this is a dream, I can do whatever the hell I want!" Then I end up doing the most random things that I never had the balls to do in real life!

Not really all that weird. I can't say that I control what I dream about, but I have noticed that on occasions I do seem to have the power to steer the direction that a dream goes, similar to what you are describing with your mother.

Yes, however uncommon, is I believe referred to as lucid dreaming. Usually takes some kind of practice and focus.
If you're interested in such things, I suggest an interesting movie called "Waking Life"

That is weird. I've never been able to control my dreams in any way.

I used to be able to do that a lot. I read that it means you are a fairly happy person. I can't do it anymore... sniffle.

I have a friend that can do exactly the same thing. He's tried to teach me how, but I can't...lol.
