I know this is a bizarre question, but, the other day I bought pears from these kids (the way you buy lemonade from kids) and it was three dollars for the bag of pears. Later I tried to eat them and they were absolutely lacking in taste. They just didn't taste good. They didn't taste bad, but not good either. Kind of lacking juice. Now, I don't blame anybody but myself because the transaction was made fair and square. I couldn't tell for sure if they were just trying to get rid of not so great pears or what. My question is...was I naive in that people try to scam you with sales like this to get rid of stuff they don't want.
Normally, I don't think twice when buying lemonade from neighborhood kids -- but I don't know what to think after this strange experience. Again, I don't blame anybody but myself, but the pears were disappointing....

If you live in a farming state or there was a farm nearby, then I wouldn't hesitate to buy from someone on the side of the road. I'm from Jersey, the Garden State, so we have farmer's stands and farmer's markets all over and the produce is always a much better quality than the supermarket. If it's not typical for wherever you live, though, then who knows why the kids were selling them. Probably same idea as a lemonade stand and they just wanted to make money and got a little creative instead. At least it was only three dollars and you probably made some kid's day anyway.

i'm not sure they would be able to predict that the pears were bad. there really isn't a way to know. you could have bought pears at a store and been disappointed, really. i guess they could have told youthe pears weren't quite ripe yet and needed to sit out for a few days, but we are talking about children here. how would they know? and i doubt they were trying to get rid of something they didn't want, unless they just had an abundance of pears lying around.
don't know what else to tell you. buying fruits and vegetables is always a crap shoot in my mind.

I've bought pears in the super market, and have then be tasteless. It may be the pears were not quite ripe enough. This comes down to the old idea of "caveat emptor" or let the buyer beware.

Well, you know, they could, like, spit in the lemonade and then sell it. Or put snot in it, or something. Or squeeze the lemons with grubby little hands!

Lotsa possibilities for getting BANGed for your buck...
