How reliable is the password protection on pdf documents?

Not very reliable. There are a lot of "Password Cracking" or "Password-Recovery" programs out there that can retrieve passwords for pdf, MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint documents, and even ZIP Archive passwords.

You can Google on "pdf password recovery" and you will get a lot of search results on what programs to download.

Password protection is reliable for those only with the Reader, they can't bypass / disable it. For someone like myself who has Acrobat Pro, it can be disabled, I've done it before. Not sure how to prevent even Acro Pro from disabling it, but there may be a way...I dunno.
