Recently a judge made a girl give her engagement ring back to her ex-fiance, how do you feel about that? If fiances break up should the girl get to keep the ring or should the guy get the ring back?

P.S. I posted this question before but I forgot to mention that the ring was given as a christmas gift, the guy didn't just propose so it was probably thought of as more of an unconditional gift not conditional.

It doesn't matter what day it was given on.
An engagement ring is a symbol of the intent to marry. If that dissolves, the ring should go back. It's not a gift - it's a promise.

If the guy gives a ring and she accepts it that constitutes a verbal contract. That being said...if he backs out, he has no claim to the ring. If she breaks it off he does have a claim. Because the contract was broken.

As a christmas gift or not....if it is legitimately an engagement ring my answer remains the same. If the ring could be looked at as not an engagement ring she keeps it regardless, because then it's only a gift.

I thought the rule was, if the woman breaks it off the ring goes back to the man, if the man breaks it off the ring stays with the woman. In the old days, engagement rings were a kind of insurance, stating that the man intended to marry the daughter, because if he didn't the ring was kept by her family... almost like a dowry. I know after marriage the engagement ring is kept by the wife no matter who broke the marriage up.

An engagement is the symbol of a promise to wed, to be committed. When that promise is broken, the ring goes back to the original owner. My cousin found out that his girlfriend had intended to break up with him for months before he proposed, and was just waiting for the ring. She never gave it back and he had to make payments on it for over two years. So I have no sympathy for girls who want to keep the rings after an engagement is dissolved.

Personally,I haven't had any experience as i'm not married or had anyone proposed to me.But i have always thought the woman should get to keep the ring no matter the circumstance unless she decides not to keep it.After all he can't pass it on to the next person.

ive already decided the ring is an unconditional gift and if she says no the ring is still hers --- it will be specifically for her and noone else
