It is a place where you can talk to people that do not know you, and cannot possibly judge you would be my guess. Personally, I am on here reading this stuff and I cannot believe some of the things I see, but hey, why not allow yahoo to make more money with a space were eventually someone is going to be held liable for one of their incorrect answers one day...

Not everybody knows how much help is out there. Those who do know may be utterly confused and overwhelmed by all the potential resources. Psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, counselors, different types of therapy (CBT, DBT, etc); honestly, who would know where to start? How do you know who to call or what to do?

Y! Answers is not the cornerstone of anyone's treatment plan, but people can get free advice from other people who have gone through the same stuff. If somebody has a question about a medication, why not ask somebody else who has taken it? If somebody feels like hurting themselves, isn't it good that instead of *doing* it, they're on the internet looking for coping strategies?

I do my best to refer people to the right kind of professional help, and I encourage other users to do the same. But mental illnesses like bipolar disorder and depression don't come with a handbook, and I would never judge somebody for *how* they seek help. As long as they seek help at all, we will point them in the right direction.

some people have problems that can only be tackled bit by bit. asking questions here can be one in a number of steps. everybody needs help at some point and in some area of life. people shouldn't condemn. imagine you were feeling helpless , cut off or desperate... this is a very anonymous way of communicating with others, of reaching out when everything else is too much. no, i'm not talking about homework issues here, primarily....

there is an ethical angle possibly about whether yahoo has considered the implications of people taking advice here, but where would that not apply elsewhere on the web or in life in general...

it's just a tool to use for communicating......much like the web as a whole....there's no obligation to use it, and the site covers most subjects so you don't need to feel excluded..

Maybe because they're afraid or embarassed. But the internet provides anonymity, which explains why they turn to Yahoo! Answers instead of seeking professional help.

Most professionals are on an average skill level, so it is always wiser to fish in a bigger pool of opinions (that can be mostly dismissed) than to rely on one randomly chosen authority figure, that will be most probably a mediocre one.

some people are trying to reach out without giving their identity, most likely. maybe they feel embarrased of the way they are feeling or that they dont know how to fix it.

i just sit here and ask questions about games and answer other people's questions with my best advice. it's nice when you're bored.
