I recently bought a 1988 dodge dakota, it's supposed to be a stock 3.9L V6(I think it's called a 239). But I was told that it's not the original engine by the seller. Where do I look on the engine to find out what kind of engine it is?

the guy I bought it from fed me a line of crap a mile long in the first place, I doubt I'd get a straight answer. :( He still owes me the rims for the rear end D:

The engine ID for 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 engines is cast into the side of the block just below the head, right above the starter.
To see it from the top, you need a mirror because the exhaust manifold is in the way. The numbers 239, 318 and 360 will be in the group of numbers.

If it is still a V-6 then its still a 3.9L If its a V-8 Then its more than likely a 5.2 or a 5.9 (318/360)

Maybe he meant it is not the original engine but it is the same size. Did you ask him?
