i've had cats all my life and never been able to keep the ones that like to go out in the house. we aquired my daughter's cat, oreo cause he wouldnt stay in and she's in an apartment that dosnt allow animals. she was hiding him but very unsuccesfully. my only suggestion would be to keep little squirt bottles near the doors and squrt him every time he trys to get out, purely for training reasons. most cats only need a few drops of water to get the idea. after a while when you reach for the bottle he'll back away. you wont need to squrt. try it, might work.

First of all, is your kitty neutered? If not, arrange surgery with your vet ASAP.

Can you install a screen door on your entry way? That's one way to deter your kitty from escaping. What you do is when you're ready to leave the house, open the screen door first, making sure your cat doesn't exit through the screen door also. Once you've opened the screen door, and closed it, open the front door. You may have to go to your local home improvement center to get a good, strong screen door.

Good luck.

Keep the cat in a room with all his things. Litter box, water/food and a window to look out of whenever you leave, and close the door. Simple. Then you won't have to worry about him sneaking by every time you open the door to leave. Let him out when you're home for the rest of the day. After a while he'll get used to it.

The idea is to be smarter than the cat. Have someone hold kitty while everyone else makes their get away. Or, buy a pet carrier and put kitty away before you leave. He will eventually put the two together and stop trying to beat you out the door.

As someone who has owned cats almost my whole life, I've found this to be (so far) impossible! Sometimes a cat gets a taste of the outdoors and then nothing stops them. I had one cat that would chew holes in the window screens just to get out!

For the scratching, you get a nail clipper that is sold for cats, and snip off the very tip of his claws. That at least will lessen the damage.

For the escape attempts, you want to squirt bottles. One inside to squirt at him as he tries to rush the door, and one outside to have in your hand when you come in. Few cats will rush into a squirt of water. Saying NO! in a firm voice when you squirt is also useful.

Can you build an outdoor enclosure? One with access from a window in back or just with a door on the outside? That's usually enough to keep them happy with being outdoors.

Pitch a ball to the other side of the room just before you go out the door. He'll chase it and you can get away.

put your cat in another room if the door is going to be opened or closed. or, have someone grab the cat before the door opens. yeah, cats are wily.
