Most charge per square meter, not sq feet, £40 per day is way too cheap, if you don't like the finish at £40 you won't see them again, the cost will vary dependent on how busy they are, whether or not they have premises or work from home, and how legally they trade.

First find your plasterer! I paid mine £350 for 1/2 a days work. This seemed expensive, but he was the only one who a) came with a reference for good work, b) submitted a quote! I'd tried eight, (8!), 4 didn't even bother to turn up, and was never heard of again, one wanted to nail wood to the wall instead, one didn't bother submitting a quote and said the job was too small and the other wanted £600. If you find a good one, tell your friends!

being a plasterer myself i would not crawl outta bed for less than £150 a day wether in there for 3 hours or 8 hours....it all depends on job and wether its cash or not...one thing i would say though is supply materials yourself as we plasterers make up our wages with over charging materials

Self employed, I'd say a good one is worth £160 - £200 per day, after all the costs of running a business he will get £110 - £150 of that in his pocket
