Everyone has delusions because no one has all the right answers. A delusion is a false belief or opinion. You however singled out the delusions of the mentally ill.

I think such a delusion is the patient's attempts to rationalize what is happening to him/her in their mind and/or environment to the best of his/her ability with the knowledge they have. Considering the delusions of the mentally ill as an especially bad type of delusion comes from their being considered as an especially bad type person. They aren't that and they are sick; that is an especially bad type of mental process is going on in their brains which they are trying to explain to themselves and others.

The best way to cope with a delusion is via education. To dispel a false belief or opinion one must test it's veracity by all means available. This is hard to do for many people because a delusion may be very logical to them based on what knowledge they have and very comforting.

A case in point is religious belief. Richard Dawkins, a famous atheistic scientist recently wrote a book, 'The God Delusion" in which he stated that anyone who believes in God is suffering from a delusion. That is a lot of deluded people! Unfortunately in a kind of vengeful way many fundamentalist preachers claim all science is a delusion. And so we live in a deluded world! How do you cope with your delusions? Educating yourself is the answer I think.

Good luck with your delusions, good mental health, peace and love!

Realise there is a deceptive power at work and weigh your thoughts and don't believe everything you think.
