I have notice over the years, I have seen a number of Japanese ex-D1GP drivers have defected to Formula D, a few examples are the 2004 D1 champion Ryuji Miki, Mitsuru Haruguchi, Seigo Yamamoto and from what I heard NOB Taniguchi

Is it the money from the import scene that is attracting them, because they are getting better money there or what is it

It would be the sponsors who make that decision. Prize money only ever covers a fraction of the expenses of a competitive team. Obviously the Japanese constructors and after-market parts manufacturers already have good market share in Japan. They could always increase their market share in the US though. The Japanese drivers are proven winners, so they can get their sponsor's brands out there by winning in the US.
