If you have an (obviously) important exam during Ramadan, would that be a valid reason to miss a day of fasting and make it up after?

It's very easy to know the answer. There are 2 types who can break their fast (of course, fasting is not obligatory for children):
1) Traveler (does not include those who travel to intentionally break their fast). This: we need to make the missed days after Ramadan and nothing to pay.
2) Illness: In that, it includes 2 types:
a) Temporarily: It includes any temporary sickness or disease, menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding. This: we need to make the missed days after Ramadan and nothing to pay.
b) Permanent: People with incurable diseases, very old people who fasting would affect their health negatively. This type of people, need to feed a person for each day they miss from their average meals (a good meal). Sometimes older people might fast some days and break the fast if they felt needed, that's fine; it's better than saying that they're exempted so they won't fast at all. I stress on the fact they they willingly choose to fast under the condition "won't affect their health negatively".
Allah knows best.

So, brother, you're not sick, or traveling. Also, please remember that great wars in Islam took place in Ramadan, and that the prophet and Sahabah worked just like they did any other day. If each one of them would break his/her fast, then most people would break it because they lived in a dessert-like area and they worked harder than reading (studying). So, no brother, you can't break your fast unless you will hurt yourself by fasting (not enough to say that you would get thirsty, hungry, "out of it", or etc) I hope I helped. May Allah help you in your exams, prayers, and fasting. Remember: Your test in Akhirah (hereafter) is more important than a test in school, or Dunya (this life).

Allah knows best.

No, it's not a reason not to fast. Eat well before the sunrises, you will be fine. This is part of Ramadan -- it is the mental test of not eating that one has to really deal with!!!

Funny so many non-Muslims answered and told you it's okay.

I've already had 3 important exams and more to come. I can find "legitimate" reasons for missing fasts if I went with this point of view.

i dont think so. you are not running around or doing physical activity it is just an exam. that isnt quite a valid reson for fasting. all you are doinh during the exam is writing and reading so you shouldnt miss the day of fasting.

No I do not think that is a valid excuse to not fast. No matter how important the test is even if it the test that decides whether you become a doctor or not, you should still fast. Just think about it: if you fast for Allah and PRAY to ALLAH that you will do good,
if allah is willing- he will help you even more on your test.

P.S. How old r u?

God is great... how do u think He wouldn't help u in ur exam? Do NOT underestimate God... u pray, u fast, u do what little He has asked u to do... n He'll give u whatever u want... God this great we have to be in Sojood every second of our lives...

Its NOT a legit excuse... u just study as much as u can (its best to study in the early hours of the day during Ramadan)...

If u don't... u have to fast for 60 days for each day u miss without a legit excuse... n/or feed 60 poor men for each missed fast...

I don't think you can miss a day of fasting.
You're essentially stating that the exam is more important than your devotion to God/Allah.

This is just a guess on my part.

Nope, can't do that. You're not going to war or something (that you would head up as an excuse for skipping fast). Even Rasulallah went to a war to fight musyrikin during fasting month.
Teach yourself to endure fasting, mate.

Yes of course it is. If fasting will (And it likely will) affect your ability to perform in the exam then you can fast it some other day. Just because it's not mentioned directly in the Quran doesn't mean it's not permissable. God tells us in the Quran that he only wants for us what is Good, and that he doesn't to make life difficult for us. Obviously you wouldn't be doing anything wrong, fasting during an Exam can lead to a VERY poor performance.
