my next door neighbour was murdered late tuesday night.
the police have been in my block of flats constantly since it happened.
i understand that they have to get evidence n stuff but today i went to pay my rent i told the i would be back before 3pm to get ready for work. i got told they would probably be gone by then.
when i did get back a couple of hours later they had blocked off the entire landing with a black screen so i couldnt get in my flat.

i had to ring up work and i have lost a days wages. i dont get many hours at the moment so its really annoyed me.

they also expected me to stand outside in the cold for upto 2 hours while they did whatever they were doing behind the screen.

will i be able to get any compensation for this??

Gosh. How terrible for you. The inconvenience of getting a bit cold. I am truly stunned by the degree of selfishness you display and your total lack of compassion. Someone has been murdered. If that person was your neighbour, you surely knew them or at least recognised them in the street yet this seems to have no impact on you. This person is dead, and you are trying to get compensation from the police because they are doing their job and trying to catch a killer. You're a cold, heartless person. You lost a day's wages, your neighbour lost his/her life. I think in the grand scale of things, you could be a lot worse off.

Maybe next time, the murderer should write you an appointment letter and let you know that he is going to kill someones husband, brother, son, or friend.

How rude of him not to inform you of his intentions. And how inconsiderate of the police for not telling you that when a person is killed that they may just want to preserve eveidence to identify the killer. I am sure if you ask, the family of the victim would be happy to support your claim, as it seems they have nothing but the highest respect for their neighbours.

For gods sake, a days pay? Is that all a life is worth to you? The suffering that the victims family is going through and you are wanting compensation for a days pay? How much compensation should the victims family recieve?

It beggars belief what some people will do for compensation. I am surprised you haven't asked them for compensation for the noise the sirens made attending the crime. We all know how important our sleep is.

If they catch the perpetrator of the crime then make an application to the court for damages to you and the court may award you what you lost out......... but the police wont give you anything as they were doing their job correctly, it was the murderer that cost you not the police.

If however the police had finished their investigation completly in that area and then failed to reopen the landing sat down had tea watched a portable tv picked their noses then yes if they keep you out of your property and you lost out then maybe at a streatch they did not act sufficianly which cost you then you may have a case but really that is a total low claim to make.

I doubt you can, because if you think about situations like if there is a crime on a public road and the road needs to be closed for a day people can't get compensation for not being able to get to work nor can the businesses down that road for their customers not being able to get to them, it would bankrupt the police if they were able to and they would never be able to collect any evidence. I don't think this really sounds like the police's fault, they're just doing what's nessacery and I don't think you can get any compensation unless they acted inappropriately, like they harassed you etc. I think collecting evidence for as long as it takes would be seen as acting appropriately in the situation so I doubt there's much you can do, sorry.

possibly, but what is shocking about your question is how unimportant the murder of the person living next door to you. I think you should question your values, being outside for 2 hours isn't really that significant is it? ok, they will probably pay your day's wage. Why didn't you go for a nice walk in a field somewher rather than wait around behind the black screen, that's the question you should be asking.

No. Is this question wind up or are you really this callous and uncaring for the victim and their family? Can anyone really be thinking of claiming compensation when the Police are dealing with a murder, are you really that desperate and money orientated?
Sad question.

What a fine neighbor you are, if a member of your family is murdered, would you suggest the police forget about important proceedures?
What is it with you people and compensation. If you cant afford to have a day off, then study for a better job!
What if your ill and cant work, would you sue yourself for compensation? Who pays the compensation...the police? think again, its the taxpayers.

You should have called or asked to speak with the public information officer as soon as you found out you were going to displaced. They could have put you in a hotel room for the night or however long they needed.

By now it may be too late and you have no recourse.
