My daughter is 7 years old and she constantly chews on her tongue. Shes been doing it ever since i can remember, like about a year old. She really does it bad when she is concentrating. Ive tried constantly reminding her, and even putting her in time out. The hard part is she doesnt realize that she is doing it most of the time. any suggestions will be appreciated.

problem is that she is doing it more constantly. she now even tries to speak while biting her tongue. i thought she would grow out of it when she was smaller but its gotten worse.

I don't have an answer, but I do the same thing. I'm almost 15 and chew my tongue. It's bad really, and I try to stop but that's easier said than done. I play hockey, and you have to wear a mouth guard. That helps a bit (when I wear it, anyway), but I've even found ways to chew even when the guard is in. Sad, eh?
I'm the same way as her, when I am concentrating, I chew my tongue without a second thought. It comes naturally. I don't think it's a bad thing. The first time it bleeds she'll either stop or not even register what she's done (I think it's the first of the two). I'm an exception to that, I've bitten my tongue countless times and still can stop.
Remind her when she's doing it. And please, don't punish her. If she's anything like me, she doesn't even think about it. Give it time, and Never stop Reminding her. It will help a bit. But, I don't think it will ever be truly broken.
Sorry I couldn't be of better assistance.

Let the child be. The more you push her to stop, the more she'll feel bad about herself and for what? Over what is really a harmless habit? Not worth it!! She will eventually stop doing it because her friends will start teasing her about it.
Just let it go and give her some time. She'll let it go, too, eventually. I promise you she will not be at the Sr. Prom biting her tongue and holding her blankie!

I don't really see what the problem is with this unless she is injuring herself but if this is the case I'm sure she will stop if seh starts hurting.

And why is this such a problem that you have to punish her? Pick your battles! This is a minor thing that is not hurting anything. Why make it into more of an issue than it is! She is a child, but also is a small person with her own quirks and personality! Let her be who she is!!

I think you should just let it go. It's not hurting anybody. Worst that can happen is her tongue will be sore. She will grow out of it so try not to worry.

Its a little late to try and stop her if shes been doing it for 6 years. she should outgrow it i wouldnt worry as long as shes not hurting herself.
