I'm not an atheist, but I find that the political aspects of some religions ridicule intelligence and freedom. How many people have been sent to war because of religion? How many religions insist that everyone believes what they believe? How many ridicule other religions?
What I believe is that people not only have a right, but a responsibility to figure things out for themselves. If that is honestly done and someone decides to be an atheist, then that is their right and it should be respected.

Because all religions share common traits .
First , they were usually founded by some self serving leader or group who claimed , but could not objectively prove , that they had some form of very special contact with "God" . ( Simple example : The never seen Golden Tablets given to the founders of the Mormon Religion .)
Second , Religions change their beliefs as science uncovers answers . ( Simple example : The Earth revolves around the Sun , not the other way around .)
Third , Leaders , even within the same religion debate about what is right or wrong . (Simple Example : The Anglican Church views on homosexuality .)
Fourth , The number of religious leaders who become involved in activities that are clearly wrong . ( Simple Example : Priests who have sex with young boys .)
Fifth , The contradictions in the holy books such as the Bible and Q'uran . ( Do I really need to provide examples ! ?)
And finally , the teachings of these groups often fly in the face of science and common sense . ( Simple Example ; The Hindu Deities who were animals who had human characteristics .)

Most atheists probably view religion as a necessary or convenient ridiculousness, since it is such a good tool for keeping the "unthinking" on the straight & narrow.

Religion IS ridiculous: to "have faith" in anything for which there is little to no empirical evidence is just plain foolish, by definition!

Because it doesn't just govern the lives of the people who choose to subscribe to it, the rest of us have to suffer, too. We still have plenty of ridiculous rules like the ban on selling alcohol on Sundays, nevermind the current battle to restrict science in our schools to only things that "mesh well" with Christian thought. It's not enough that religious people obey all the rules in their Good Book, they want the rest of us to subscribe as well - ignore science and insist abortion is murder and homosexuality is a sin. It's utterly ridiculous that in an advanced society with our level of science and technology that there would even still be debate around accepted scientific principles like evolution. It's hard not to find someone ridiculous when they're denying the reality that is right in front of their face, and then they go and try to control my life on top of it. Simply ridiculous.

I'm an atheist, and religion isn't ridiculous to me in any way, shape or form, and in fact I don't think I've ever considered that adjective at all, ever when thinking about religion. I went to Catholic grade school for 8 years, so I certainly had exposure to religion- it just isn't something that inspires/comforts/or motivates me in any way shape or form. But is it funny, or ridiculous? No.

Many religious concepts are ridiculous, like those related to dress, diet, hair length, or other things that have no bearing on the spiritual - if they do have bearing it's really silly. This applys to all religions. Modesty is another concept that is rather strange, we know many societies that have less modesty and do much better at sex.

Then there are the obvious contradictions and the lack of foreknowledge of human rights.

I am willing to guess that you think the theories of the Harry Chrisnas is ridiculously. or how about reverend Sun Yung moon and his followers.

Atheists look at the world and see dozens of religions all arguing that their tenets are the true tenets. No two religions can agree entirely on who or what is God. and How should we worship/follow him. So why shouldn't they find it ridiculous.

I am a believer and I find it ridiculous.

What I find ridiculous are the people who assume that just because they get a certain buzz out of their religion, that I should follow their religion too.

Let's see... a magical invisible man in the sky who wished the universe into being for no particular reason. He is merciful and just and loves us all but if we guess the wrong religion to follow, he will consign us to an eternity of torture.
Hmm... what's ridiculous about that...?
