How long does baking soda last pat the expiration date?

I want to do some baking, but the only baking soda that I can find in the house is an opened 10 lb box, but I can't tell the entire expiration date because it is partially blocked by the store bar code tag which I can't remove.

How long does baking soda last?

The baking soda was stored in a tied white plastic bag in the cupboard. I just found it while cleaning out stuff (trying to find something else, ironically!)

I think it is probably at least a year or two old, since it was in a cupboard, that had an "island cabinet trolley" in front of it for at least that long.

If you decide to use the baking soda anyway...make sure it IS baking soda. I haven't seen a box of baking soda that big in years, but Arm & Hammer does make a baking soda laundry soap in a 10 # box!

I know I didn't answer your question, but thought you should double check the box!

I would say use it. I have had my baking soda for a while. Get some lemon juice and heat it. Put it in a cup and put it in the sink. Put a small amount of the soda in it. If it boils out the top of the cup I just bet you it's still good.

Why not goggle Arm and Hammer and ask them?

I wouldn't use it for baking at this point. It might make whatever you bake too hard or cause it to flatten. Six months is pretty much the most you can push it, once the container is opened. Baking is too much work (and too easy to screw up) so it's best to stay within the recommended time limits.

If it is sitting on a shelf to be used for baking it lasts forever. If it is in the fridge for freshening it need to be changed. Don't use it for baking when you change it throw it away cuz it will have absorbed odors in the fridge.

if you store it in the refrigerator around like many months! practically a year. if it is stored outside the refrigerator...around a few months.. no more. like 4 or 5. replace after finished or if it isn't working in food anymore.
