As an Example: If There are 7 flights a day from Heathrow to some place in the U.S.
You wan't to fly to that point in the U.S. you would have to get a shuttle from your local airport to London.
Would it not be better to say have 2 flights from Manchester, 2 from Glasgow, and the rest from Heathrow?

Well yes that is better, and there are a lot of flights from Manchester and Glasgow to places in the USA.

But remember that about 40% of the UK's population lives in the Southeast and East, and then you have to add on people in the Southwest and Midlands who don't mind travelling to London too, hence the huge number of flights from London compared to elsewhere.

Many American people also fly to the Uk and guess what they want to see London.Northern airports dont as yet have the importance of Heathrow and Gatwick. As an example A Boeing 737 flew into Birmingham for 1 year from Kiev and the average load factor was around 15 each way.BA operates daily flights to Kiev with an 80% load factor.Ukraine Air operate flights from Gatwick with 70% load factor. There are 2 flights per day operating to the US from Manchester AA and Delta.

It comes down to basic economics.

If the airline can make it pay they will operate the route.

Far more people live/work in the South-East/London area than in Glasgow hence more flights.

Airlines need load factors of about 75% to break even. It's a cut-throat industry. If they can't sell the seats they cut the route.

Enviromental considerations don't matter. The effect of aircraft on the environment is trivial. Your local MP being desperate for votes may not agree.

Unfortunately i think they have you by the bollocks in this one, obviously there are not that many people who want to fly to these destinations at those times of year, but throughout the whole country there will be enough, so if you really wanna go there then you have to travel to be able to fly. For instance if there was only one Airport in the while of the UK, we would all travel there to fly to somewhere else.
You go where the service is, cause they wont bring the service to you if there is not any money in it for them.
