I just found out that a co-worker who used to be in charge of my newest duties was getting paid an extra $1500 per month to do them! I'm supposed to be getting a raise... or at least that's what I was told FIVE months ago! I'm no good at taking up for myself, but this really has me mad. What should I do?

It's time to dump that not being good at taking up for yourself hang up. People treat you like you tolerate being treated. If you are certain the co-worker story is true, approach the supervisor or boss and remind them you are still waiting for your raise that was promised five months ago.

Make a list of all the new duties you've taken on, and anything special that you do that makes your co-worker's day easier. Make an appointment to speak to the mangager or person who would award this raise, and talk about the things on the list, and why you should get a raise. THE OTHER PERSON'S SALARY HAS NO BEARING ON WHAT YOU MAKE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. So do not mention it. They could have special training or experience that you know nothing about. Raises are awarded based on what a specific person (you) does, not what other people make.

You just need to sit down with your boss and say "We need to talk about the pay increase that was supposed to coincide with my increase in duties. It is my understanding you have paid previous employees $1500 per month to take on this workload. I would like the same consideration."

Then get it in writing.

State your case clearly and objectively to the boss, remind them how patient you've been, and if they don't give you the raise, go over their head.

Sounds like an unfair and lousy place to work. Get that resume out there. Life is too short.
