I have an audition in a couple of weeks for a musical, it is really important to me so I want to get the song perfect.
It has to upbeat, and all the songs I usually sing are slow power ballads so I am a bit stuck.
Can someone please give me some ideas of upbeat audition songs and also tell me what they mean by upbeat as well, thank you so much! x

Have you thought about any of the songs from Hairspray? When I read this question, I thought immediately of "I Can Hear the Bells." Don't know if this is exactly what you want, but you can give the cast recording a listen, and see if there's anything you like.

Wicked also seems to be hugely popular, and there are a lot of upbeat songs -- like Defying Gravity.

(-: Or Spamalot. HUGE range, both for voice and expression. If you were auditioning with a guy, the lounge act version of "The Song That Goes Like This" really would show off a lot of your voice and talent.

What is the musical you are auditioning for? Sorry to the other posters, but Wicked, Rent, and Hairspray are ALL terribly overdone. The judges or auditors do not want to hear those songs over and over again and won't even bother with you. On the other hand, something too foreign is not the best choice. You want familiar but not ordinary.

An upbeat song is uptempo and usually lighter than a ballad, normally a more fun song than emotional, but not always true. Some picks:
The Life of the Party - The Wild Party
It's Delovely - Anything Goes
Honey Bun - South Pacific
Spanish Rose - Bye Bye Birdie
Glitter and be Gay - Candide

Choose "Defying Gravity," "Popular," "The Wizard and I," (all three from Broadway's Wicked) or "Out Tonight," from RENT. They're all my favorites and surprizingly enough...upbeat. Preview them and see what you think. Good luck, happy trails to you!

I really like the song "stars and the moon" Audra McDonald sang it, and it is a great character piece.
