If you are able to book tickets ahead of your trip and you don't mind being tied to a single train you can get the price down quite a bit. I've just had a quick look and by buying two singles you can travel for £22 return. Best thing to do is look at the National Rail website http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and put in the dates of travel and times and see what you are offered. You might find if you are flexible with your times that helps to.
