We had puppies (half Shih-Tzu) and there are four. They all have ears but it doesn't look like they have any holes for their ear canals. My mother has had tons of dogs throughout the years, and she said she's never seen something like this before. But, we have never had this breed of dog before. We didn't know if it was a characterstic and it was ok, like we just were missing something.
Any help would be great! The puppies are 3 days old by the way.

I have never dealt with smaller breed puppies and it is technically my brother's gf's dog. My mom is just watching it for the time being so they can have enough attention while the puppies are still small and fragile.
We've had lots of puppies and they never looked like that so I didn't know. That's why I asked the question...

Nothing's wrong with them. Just give them time and the ears will open up.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but when I do not know the answer to something, I ask a question. I may be briefer than the situation really is for the sake of being clear. Sorry you had to get flamed to find out that it is normal, but it is. An anonymous call to the vet with the question can confirm it for you, just to help, most vets will field the odd call now and then, at least ours will.
Glad to hear no puppies are "suffering"

Bassetnut is right. I'm pretty sure that their ears start to open around the same time their eyes do...I'm not 100% though cause I don't breed dogs and both of my dogs are fixed. I leave the breeding to the professional, reputable breeders out there.

Puppies are born blind and def(sp?) Inside the mother the puppies need to be protected from fluid getting into their ears.... It is completely normal. The ears will open up in a few days. Their eyes will open soon after. Congrats!!!

WTF are you breeding dogs that you have no previous experience of?!?!?! And CROSS breeds at that! Oh, well, I'm sure you'll be able to come up with a cute selling point, like, erm...'deafshihs' 'Ideal for noisy households, these designer pups wont hear a thing'.
Get these pups to the vets NOW...unless playing on the internet is too much of an allure to seek HELP.

EDIT: well, I have now read the other answers....and learned something I didn't know! But as I have no intentions of adding to the overpopulation of unwanted dogs, MY ignorance wont EVER jeapordise the health of a litter!
Glad these pups are 'OK' though.

Wow...that doesn't sound good but not being able to see it myself I definitely would go to my vet right away. By the way why are you letting your dog have puppies anyway? Obviously, if this observation is as you say it is you have no knowledge of possible birth defects in this mating. Was it an accident or did you let it happen on purpose? Either way it was irresponsible & selfish. Please spay/nueter your pets as soon as possible & remember to rescue. I don't have to tell you about animal suffering & over population...everyone else who responds to your question will.

They are still small and their ears probably haven't developed all the way yet. Just keep an eye on them.
