I mean, is it a requirement at all? Is a medical exam required or can I get a work visa without one?

We have sent expats to China from few weeks to 4-5 years in the past 20 years. If you don't want to get a green book (temporary resident card) then you don't need to take the medical exam. The only use of the green book is you can travel with it within China without your passport. Most of our guy didn't get it unless they were here for long stays like 2-4 years.

Absolutely not, once you arrive in China your company will arrange for you to be examined by a medical doctor.

You cannot enter China to work with a work Visa, there is no "green book" in China, he is thinking of the USA.

Tai has no idea what he is talking about, you don't need "travel papers" while in China, he has obviously not been anywhere near China since the early 1980's.
