Armageddon, or Har–Magedon, is a transliteration of the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew expression Har Meghid·dohn′ meaning “Mountain of Megiddo,” or “Mountain of Assembly of Troops.” It is linked with “the war of the great day of God the Almighty.” So Armageddon is not a political skirmish, an economic disaster, a nuclear holocaust, or a human conflict. Rather, Armageddon is God’s war.

Armageddon will be fought because God is righteous and will no longer tolerate evil. (Psalm 11:7) Satan the Devil’s organization, comprising both demons and rebellious humans, responsible for millenniums of wickedness and woe, must therefore be destroyed. (Compare Genesis 3:15.) Jehovah’s universal sovereignty will be upheld at Armageddon, and that war will clear his name of the reproach heaped upon it for centuries. As God declared through his prophet Ezekiel: “I shall no more let my holy name be profaned; and the nations will have to know that I am Jehovah.” Ezekiel 39:7.

Some people have been led to believe that Armageddon will mean the extinction of mankind. God’s war of Armageddon will actually prevent the destruction of all mankind. Jehovah created the earth to be inhabited, not destroyed in a thermonuclear war among humans or otherwise rendered unfit for life. (Isaiah 45:18) He will “bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” (Revelation 11:18)

Much of Revelation draws from the history and prophecy of the Hebrew Scriptures. For example, Armageddon is derived from the Hebrew Megiddo and signifies Jehovah's decisive victory over his earthly enemies.

Likewise, the mandatory worship of the image of the beast should remind us of the historical account in the 3rd chapter of Daniel where Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image on the Plains of Dura and ordered representatives from his entire empire to attend the inaugural ceremony of the image. Anyone who refused to bow before the image was to be put to death.

Not coincidently, the towering image measured 60 cubits by six cubits. The 666, being "a man's number," ought to evoke in our mind's the man Nebuchadnezzar. So, the 666 of Revelation symbolizes the decisive situation, when, during the last hour the image of the beast will attempt to force all mankind, and especially Jehovah's anointed witnesses, to deny their faith in God.

Like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, those who are sealed with the name of Jehovah and Christ on their foreheads will join their Lord in the fiery furnace of martyrdom for their staunch refusal to worship the image of the beast during the last hour.

"Armageddon" is taken from the Hebrew name "Har Megiddo", or the "Valley of Megiddo". In ancient Israel, this was a valley where wars often occurred. However, in Bible prophecy, it refers to the end-time spiritual battle that will occur against God by the forces of evil led by Satan. It is during this time that Satan will be destroyed, along with all his followers.

That is a big question, because there is so much written about it throughout the entire Bible. It is the time when Christ returns with all the Christians who were taken to heaven 7 or more years earlier, to earth to defeat allthe nations of the earth who have assembled to fight against Israel. They assemble in the Valley of Armageddon to attack Jerusalem which lies a number of miles tot he south. A fierce battle ensues, the blood runs up to the height of the horses bridles, and when the fighting gets down to hand to hand combat in Jerusalem Christ returns and defeats the nations of the earth. Israel then receives and recognizes Jesus Christ as their coming Messiah, and the Kingdom is set up.
