I'm Buddhist but my RS teacher told us that Buddhists can't be sarcastic as they shouldn't lie, they can't tell white lies or just dumb jokes to wind people up.Is this true?

My boyfriend is Buddhist and I'll tell ya, the guy is so sarcastic. He can't be serious for five minutes. And that is what I love about him- his awesome sense of humor.

According to Lord Buddha's teachings, it is a sin to lie even for a joke. So Buddhists should not lie for the sake of being sarcastic. But I believe we can be sarcastic without saying any lies.

The Dalai Lama has a great sense of humor and laughs a lot. I've never heard him say anything sarcastic. I would think that Buddhists wouldn't want to use sarcasm to communicate. The reason Buddhists don't lie is because they don't need to, not because they restricted from doing it.

I think you are missing the main point of buddhism which is to be aware.
Awareness is the main aspect, Buddha used to say, I am not very different from other but I am just a awakened person.

Dont worry too much about outer things.
Osho had great understanding of Buddhism, you can read his books or search online.

A main point of Buddhism compassion for others...is winding others up compassionate or cruel? Sarcasm, if it is not appreciated, may not be the most compassionate thing to do either.

But Buddhism also has no hard and fast rules...so there is no "can't" or "thou shalt nots".

Why lie? Buddhism seeks truth...why confound?
