anyone know if IBS affects milk supply?>
Question Details: I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So badly that I've lost a TUN of weight. Before I got pregnant I dropped down to 107. I had sch a hard time gaining weight durring my pregnacy that the doctors threatened to put me on steriods. Well, glad to say the birth went well and my son is healthy. but as much as it pains me, we had to put him on formula because I can't produce enough milk (probably because I have such a hard time getting food down). I'm on lactation vitamins and drink a lot of water. I'm back to 120 pounds, so I'm not realy underweight anymore. But I was wondering if anyone else w/ IBS had the same issue and if so what to do about it?

I'm glad you and your child are healthy at this point!

It sounds like you are getting enough hydration and vitamins, although your fluid intake may be low if you have diarrhea-predominant IBS. Aim for at least 3 liters/quarts of fluid daily, mostly from water, or Pedialyte if you have severe diarrhea.

Assuming you are adequately hydrated, overall nutrition could be an issue. A consult with a registered dietitian might help you find some areas of improvement to kickstart the process.

There is not much research on IBS in pregnancy or in the early post-natal period, probably because it is unethical to research any interventions that could possibly harm the mother or the fetus. Most exclusion criteria for studies include pregnancy or lactation.

Finally, the take home message: please be certain you are at a healthy weight and as asymptomatic as possible before getting pregnant again. If you start out nutritionally replete, you and your child will have a better chance of getting through the pregnancy in good health. There are several therapeutic options for IBS you can try to keep that calm before you get pregnant.

IBS had an indirect effect on you. It was your low body weight and not taking in enough fluid that dried up your milk.
Next time, don't get pregnant without being a normal weight. Ask your doctor about Dicyclomine, it is a marvelous medication for helping with the symptoms of IBS.

I had IBS earlier than i used to be pregnant, and for the period of being pregnant, it went away. I dont have it anymore. I might say that your OB might be satisfactory at telling you if it impacts your provide. Just be certain you get adequate to drink, and preserve hydrated. Good Luck
