I have an RS232 (serial) port on my TV, it says its for service only, please tell me what this means, I am interested in finding out what it does.

Most Tvs use the RS-232 port for two main things: a) Update the firmware of the TV or b) Remote control using RS-232 commands. Sometimes, they also use it as a debugging port, when the TV fails.

Well a TV TECH comes to your home and connects a computer to your "SERVICE ONLY" port.....

And makes adjustments to your TV or UPLOADS software to your TV if it has a need for it.....

Most TVs have a service port somewhere on it. And different means of accessing service menus.

Personally, I like the NO COMPUTER based service systems....it lets me access service menus without a computer, and lets me UPGRADE software by just connecting a USB memory stick or another style of memory stick to it...
MORE PORTABLE than a computer....

They're using old com software. Don't worry about it.
