Asteroid hits the earth, causes a dust cloud that obliterates the sun and causes the earth to go into an ice age which wipes out most life including humans.

The end of times will not be through war, but thought rest. People will get lazy and feed off others. Every major nation that existed imploded.
Also note that education is very fragile. Going from great heights to the dark ages takes less than 10 years. Russia went from having some of the smartest people in the world to having most people believing that ESP was real and horoscopes was a form of science. That only took a couple of years after the break up of the Soviet Union for that to happen. Even in Western Europe, something like 30% of the population believes that horoscope reading is a real science. You see a lot of "snake oil" in the United States touting alternative medicine and alternative therapy.
Corruption will also be a major factor, people will squable over little things while their city "burns." Elitism will take hold and dangerous cliques will form. Wars will then start when power vacuums take hold.

The end of times sort of seems like it would be a one time event. Just keep waiting and watching I am sure you will recognize it when it occurs.

Read about "EMP" and the effects of electronic pulses on equipment. The air-force predicted a 90 percent death-rate of the US as the result of two spaced pulses... and that was back when there were still some trucks and equipment that were not susceptible to pulses.

I think man is inclined to destroy themselves by nuclear holocaust. Read Revelations. compare it with what is going on today. Be prepared for God's wrath.
