First of all thank you for even considering joining right now....
Ok You can go talk to a recruiter any time, but really lose the weight ,it will help you out. Just start by watching what you eat, and start exercising, It's a long process but can be done if you really want to go in. Fast tracking on weight loss can be dangerous i would believe, so take your time and do it right.
31 is not too old to join the military, my husband just re-joined the military at the age of 40, he was out of the service for 17 years and decided he wanted back in, so thats what he did.
So good luck and thank you for wanting to serve our country.
PS: the two post above mine are wrong, the army will enlist up to the age of 42 with no prior service.

It's a great and very honorable idea joining! Don't worry 31 is not too old, my boyfriend joined the army at that exact same age, and he is very happy witht his decision. It's also good motivation for losing the weight you need to. It wouldnt hurt to just talk to a recruiter now, in fact they would probably offer you help, but i would definately start exercising NOW (and don't join until you've prepared your body). The basic training you go through is tough, especially if you're not already physically fit. So start eating better and maybe join a gym, look into getting a trainer at a gym if you can afford that. Also running is crucial! That way you'll be much more prepared for the Basic Training. I know it's not easy, but neither is being in the army. Just keep in sight how proud you will feel when you accomplish your goals. Just start off slow with the exercising because you dont want to harm yourself by overdoing it. If you want it bad enough you can do it =)

Talk to the recruiter. If he is a good one, he will help you with the working out part of your weight loss. At 31, if you decided to make it your career, 20 years, you could retire at 51, still young enough to get a job somewhere else if you wanted. I heard the Army will take up to 41 or 42 year olds.
Good luck on your weight loss and if you decide to join, THANK YOU in advance for your service!

The person who said you couldn't enlist after 27 or 28 is a liar and don't know what they're talking about.
The Army... at this time is enlisting people up to the age of 41... and if you have prior Military experience that'll help too.
If you want to talk to a recruiter... you can go at ANY time. In some cases... recruiters will go running with you if you really need help to lose the weight!
You are definitely not too old to join the Army!!!! Just make sure you do a lot of running... push ups and sit ups.... this will increase your endurance.... and doing push ups will help with strength!
I'm not sure about what PT test at the end of basic for men is.... but for women it's 17 push ups 50 sit ups 2 mile run in 19:36.
I would advise being able to run a mile in 8-9 minutes before you get shipped to BCT... because if you can't do the exercises they'll send you to FAT CAMP. And you don't want that!
The recruiters are there for you to give you answers to your questions about the Army.... go up there and talk to one and do your homework and find out what you can get through the Army before you join.
If you don't know what you're getting yourself into before joining... you might or might not like military life.
I wish you good luck and health!
OH... AND ANOTHER THING!!!
BEFORE YOU JOIN... BE AHEAD OF THE GAME AND KNOW YOUR ARMY RANKS!!!!
KNOW YOUR GENERAL'S ORDERS.... AND KNOW THE ARMY CORE VALUES.... L D R S H I P!!!!!!!!!

You can go talk and see if you want to join or not...they can also give you some suggestions on losing weight. When I went through basic we had a 34 year old female and she did great. You can also look online www.army.com and see what your requirments would be for a PT test and see if you think you could do it. Good luck.

I have trained Privates 32 years old, but they were all in shape. You may have a hard time since you may be out of shape plus your age will make it harder for you to keep up with 18, 19 years old. We have Staff Non Commisioned Officers that are in their late 30's and they could out run most of our new privates but they have been conditioned for years. So it's up to you, are you really serous about the military, if not then I don't think you'll have the dedication to follow through. Even though it's the Army.

My son went into the army at the age of 29, 2 years ago.
He had worked as a laborer in construction for approx 10 years at that point.
Talked to the recruiter and, they gave him some guidelines to meet such as: 2 minute mile run in 19 minutes or so and things of that nature.
They then tested him for his times etc. and he passed.
Now serving in IRAQ and will be for the next 10 months.
TALK TO THE RECRUITER AND SEE!

50- 60 Lbs. to lose is not going to be easy.
if started yesterday it would take a year to take it off safely.
But you could still talk to recruiter. thats one step in the direction you want to go.
Good luck to you on all counts.
The change is up to you. Don't lose focus.
