Well, the license fee is only for the BBC, the Brown Broadcasting Corporation (formerly the Blair Broadcasting Corporation). That includes all four channels, all 8 radio stations and now, BBC HD.
There are probably people who watch a lot of the BBC and get value for money. I, like you am fed up with the load of old rubbish that passes for entertainment on the "flagship" broadcaster of the country.
Truth is, the BBC license tax (not fee, it is a tax, plain and simple) is probably illegal since the EU states that all members shall have the right to free news and information. Since you can't own a tv without a paid license, that is not free. Sadly, but not shocklingly, the high court ruled against this a couple of years ago.
In a recent survey, only 22% of people said they would pay for the BBC if given the choice and I read in todays paper that there will be more repeats on BBC tv as they try to save £2billion by 2012 because the government didn't give them as much money as they wanted.
For me, the BBC hasn't produced a decent comedy since Red Dwarf, sport ended when they lost the right to Grand Prix racing, I don't care much for reality tv (Elvis?! Really?!) or soaps.
I don't regard the British Bloated Corporation as good value for money and if there was an opt out, I would be first on that list.
For more information, take a visit to http://www.tvlicensing.biz/ where there is more information on this as well as a list of outstanding court cases of people who refuse to pay this illegal tax.

I've been arguing with people for years that the TV license is just another form of taxation, but amazingly there are a surprising number of people out there who think they are getting something for their money.
They usually think that by paying for the license they are keeping the BBC independent and avoiding having commercials. They don't seem to realise that the BBC became a commercial organisation quite a long time ago and now raises substantial amounts of money from selling what are supposed to be their own products (films, plays, and documentaries etc.), but which are in many cases made by smaller private companies as a sort of sub-contract.
Many of the people who own or run these private companies are former BBC Staff who are still well connected with the organisation, which is somewhat suspect to say the least, and of course these programmes, films, and DVDs are very well advertised on the BBC.
Its about time the BBC was made to stand on its own feet. It doesn't need to be so big and doesn't need to have its sticky fingers in quite so many pies.

Yes I do. Considering I already pay for Cable and watch BBC1 through that and not on the terresiteral channel.
Our Licence renewal is due in November and the other day my hubby counted 14 repeats in one day on BBC1 & 2. Reckons he's gonna photocopy last years Licence rather than pay for things he's already seen !!

well i am lucky as i have only arabic satalite in my house, there are alot of english channels on there but no bbc. it is bad and now with the switch over it looks like we dont have any choice.
if all the country got together and declined to pay it the bbc would have to rethink. but saying that people would say they will get involved and one letter with a threat to court will scare them and they would back out.
if we all got together and did that, we might be able to do the same with council tax...
the laws an ***

Gave up stressing over it a while ago. The licence goes up but the standard of TV goes down. Its all reality shows, sell your rubbish shows and celebrity chef shows with cleaning shows, do up your house shows, and sell your house shows. Now look what you've done, I'm stressing, Ahh
