I always just called my nephew by his name. There really is not a term that I can think of. He is my nephew and I have legal guardianship rights. But if he was a grandchild, foster child, friends child, etc. I would belive that is the term you would use.

My first choice would be to call the child by his/her given name.
For legal forms though - "dependent" or "ward" would most likely apply.

Legally, the child would be your dependent if you care for him/her and they are under 18

If the child is old enough ask them what they would prefer. They are not quite a step-child, but that would be the closest description.

I would imagine you would refer to the child in whatever way makes you both feel comfortable.
