And why do many women go through all of that primping and $20,000 dollar, pearl embroidered, platinum-threaded dress-buying in order to look like some antique doll that in no way represents any real moment in their life, past or future?

It goes back to an ancient Eskimo ritual for the joining of two people. The Eskimos tell a story about two young lovers that were stranded with no igloo. The male hunter died and a large penguin took his place to keep his woman warm until the blizzard subsided. In gratitude for saving the maiden, the spirit of the hunter gave the penguin permission to marry the maiden and give her children. That's why men today dress in white and black to pay homage to the great penguin that became father to us all.

They dress that way because the tux is our society's most formal menswear. A wedding is supposed to be awfully formal, which is just another social construct that has nothing to do with anything. Arguably, if God is present at the ceremony, it's in reverence for Him and meant to show that you take His presence seriously. For nonreligious services? I couldn't say.
